Malware: Understanding Malicious Software Before It Spreads

Malware is software designed to harm a device, steal information, spy on activity, damage files, display unwanted ads, or give an attacker control. It can affect phones, laptops, desktops, servers, browsers, and sometimes browser extensions.

Malware includes viruses, trojans, spyware, keyloggers, infostealers, worms, malicious extensions, and remote access tools installed without informed consent. Some malware is noisy and obvious. Other malware tries to stay hidden while collecting passwords, cookies, crypto wallet data, screenshots, keystrokes, or documents.

People often install malware by opening unsafe attachments, downloading pirated software, installing fake updates, trusting malicious ads, using cracked tools, adding suspicious browser extensions, or following instructions from fake support representatives. A device does not need to look broken to be compromised.

Prevention is mostly about reducing risky entry points. Download software from official sources, keep systems updated, avoid cracked apps, remove extensions you do not need, use reputable security tools, and be careful with files that ask you to disable protections. If infection is suspected, disconnect from sensitive accounts, run scans, remove suspicious apps, change passwords from a clean device, and review account activity.
